Screen Refresh Rate Test

Measuring…

Browsers draw once per refresh, so frame timing shows your refresh rate. For a high-refresh reading, plug in a laptop, close heavy tabs and keep this window on the screen you are testing.

Quick answer

What is the Screen Refresh Rate Test?

A refresh rate test measures how many times per second your screen redraws the picture, shown in hertz (Hz). It times your browser’s frames to report 60, 75, 120, 144, 165 or 240 Hz, so you can confirm a high-refresh monitor is really running at its rated speed.

Key features

  • Live Hz measurement with the nearest standard rate
  • Average, minimum and maximum frame timing
  • Measure again after changing display settings
  • Works on monitors, laptops, phones and tablets

Why use it

  • Confirm a 144 Hz or 240 Hz monitor is not stuck at 60 Hz
  • Check the cable, port and Windows or macOS setting are right
  • Result in seconds, no download

About the Screen Refresh Rate Test

Find out how many times per second your screen refreshes. Browsers draw one frame per refresh, so timing those frames shows your real refresh rate in Hz: 60, 120, 144, 165, 240 or more. You also see the time per frame, how many frames arrived late, and a moving block that looks smoother at higher rates. Compare frame rates side by side with the Frame Rate Test, or check motion clarity with the Monitor Ghosting Test.

How to use the Screen Refresh Rate Test

  1. Open the page and wait a second or two for the reading to settle.

  2. Read the Hz value and the nearest standard rate.

  3. If it shows 60 Hz on a high-refresh monitor, check your display settings and cable, then test again.

  4. Press F or double-tap the screen to go fullscreen, and Esc to exit.

Common uses

  • New monitor check

Confirm a 144 Hz or 240 Hz monitor is really running at that rate.

  • Cable and port issues

Older HDMI cables or ports can cap you at 60 Hz.

  • Laptop power settings

Many laptops drop to 60 Hz on battery.

  • Phones and tablets

See whether adaptive 90/120 Hz modes are active.

Frequently asked questions

Why does it show 60 Hz on my 144 Hz monitor?

The refresh rate is set in your operating system's display settings, and the cable must support it (DisplayPort or HDMI 2.0+ for high rates). Also check that the browser window is on the right monitor.

Why does the number jump around?

Busy tabs, power saving and variable refresh (FreeSync, G-Sync, ProMotion) can change frame timing. The reading uses the median of recent frames to smooth this out.

Is refresh rate the same as FPS?

No. Refresh rate is how often the screen updates; FPS is how many new frames a game or video provides. You only see as many frames as your refresh rate allows.
